The global village

We drive into the future using only our rearview mirror. Marshall McLuhan said that today’s world has been interconnected by an electronic nervous system, which is brings people from all corners of the world together. This is due to the unifying effects of communication technology and media. The media is rapidly integrating the planet such that events in one part of the world could be experienced from other parts in real-time, which is what human experience was like when we lived in small villages.
Each social media platform acts as a digital home for individuals, allowing them to express themselves through the global village. Since mass media began, it has called for the westernization of the world, hence the interconnectedness. On the internet, physical distance is even less of a hindrance to the real-time communicative activities of people. Social spheres are greatly expanded by the openness of the web and the ease at which people can search for online communities and interact with others who share the same interests and concerns.
Increased speed of communication and the ability for people to read about spread and react to global news quickly, forces us to become more involved with others from various social groups and countries around the world and to be more aware of our global responsibilities. Similarly, web-connected computers enable people to link their websites together.
All media work us over completely. They are so pervasive in their personal, political, economic, aesthetic, psychological, moral, ethical and social consequences that they leave no part of us untouched, unaffected, unaltered.
